Journalism is not a medium. The loss of newspapers and news companies is regrettable, but it doesn’t signify the death of journalism—nor does the rise of neighborhood blogs or citizen journalism. The journalism industry is changing and while it’s sad, frustrating and scary as hell, it’s also insanely exciting.

I’ve been a professional journalist since November 2007. In that time, I’ve been ignored, hired and promoted, and I’ve seen a lot of good journalists lose their jobs. At times I’ve feared for my own job and for the industry, but what’s got me through all that is a simple question: What can I do to improve things right now?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The industry is going through a complete and utter reformation—and a lot of us aren’t going to make it. Most of us who do will be the ones who innovate, who experiment—who go against everything we’ve been ever been told about journalism. It seems like there’s no surefire way to survive, but a good start is to accept the fact that we’re not special anymore. Whereas yesterday, your competition was the other town newspaper, today it’s anyone with a phone and a Twitter page.

Journalism is not a medium—it’s a service that exists across all media. To preserve journalism, we have to stop yelling to people, “You should care about this!” and start giving them a reason to care again. It can be done and it can be profitable.

I’m trying my best to be one of the people who throws out what journalism was and helps shape what journalism will be for the next generation.

    Well, how could I say something contrary to your post? Impossible. I’d like you to be heard by the whole world to convert the journalism industry to an open system.
    Stop yelling, yes! Finally someone said that!

    It’s funny—it’s been a while since I’ve updated this page and it’s nice to know that what I said many months (maybe a year?) ago still resonates and holds true. Not always the case with everything I post :)

    you are dead on…Im at a loss for other words, only that I am glad that there are people like you, and especially you – who feel this way.

    im going to be getting my masters in digital media and people think its suicide because im leaving a full time position at a huge media conglomerate.

    but I believe what you believe.

    Anyway, I’m glad you’re excited about going after your masters. If you can afford to leave your job for a shot at another degree, I think that’s great. Not sure about your specific situation, but big media companies aren’t always the best incubators for innovation; putting yourself in an environment where you can really experiment may pay off in the long run.
